Frame each scene with a purpose, a danger, and something unexpected. It keeps momentum and mystery alive.
When preparing a new scene or encounter, think in threes: What’s the hook (why the players care)? What’s the threat (what makes it dangerous)? And what’s the surprise (something they don’t expect)? A tavern brawl might hook the group with a stolen item, threaten them with guards arriving, and surprise them when the thief turns out to be a noble. This formula keeps scenes focused and layered without a ton of prep – just enough to keep tension alive and players leaning in.
